Changed the name

Can’t really say this is an all macro house anymore. All kinds of ways of eating up in this house now. The point is, we all cook and eat delicious food! SO, for now I will call it Cooking in Brooklyn. Any Ideas?

A New Beginning, Another YEAR in Bushwick house!

SO, we have completley forgot about this blog and it coudn’t be more different here in the house so I will try get you all caught up.

SO where to begin, hmmm, well first things first, who lives here now. Juliet, Zara and Andrew all moved out months and months ago. There is a whole new cast to this house. Let me introduce them: CONOR BOALS was first, he took over Juliet’s room and don’t let him fool you, he knows all. Just like in Ionia Alaska, if you need to know something, “ask Conor” he is what they call a Preditor, producer/editer. 23 and already through grad school from Columbia. What else can we say about our great roomy… He has two gorgeous bikes and LOVES hip hop and gangster rap. He is from Michigan and there is Mirra, the next roomy who I’m about to introduce, is from Wisconsin. People from the mid west are the best, just totally sweet natured, lovely, honest, and stable people. We got two of them ;) yeyeah!

Up next is Mirra, MIRRA KOHLMOOS She is the coolest one of a kind, and the best at washing dishes and sweeping floors! Also she has madd skill at being unemployed. Maybe she learned that in my home community “Ionia” in Alaska where she lived for a year shortly before arriving here. She loves the city and all it has to offer but, like me, is SUCH a nature girl at heart. We have always been close and are even closer now that we share a room and pretty much do everything together! She loves dance. Salsa, capoeira, and tango. She can even teach beginner tango classes. She is a killer guitarist and thankfully, my music teacher! Her and I cook a lot together. Jeff her and I look forward to our weekly friday pie day. Last week it was beet pie and as I say punkin pie. My roomies love to make fun of that one. I know I know, it’s PUMPKIN but that’s how I remember saying it from when I was a kid and it stuck haha. Anyways, the beet pie was a real winner and an awesome creative idea of the one and only, Mirra Kohlmoos. She cut the beets real thin and it worked great. Pics to come.

Soon after Mirra’s arrival we acquired JEFF from Fort Myers FL. He is madd cool! He is tall and thin, has a pretty face, and is happy and humerus most days. AND, he can grow a hell of a beard. He was employed but than he wasn’t. He cooks a lot of delicious Vegetarian food and makes up his own recipes which is well, awesome!! We all cook dinners together a lot! As seems to be the trend in this house, he writes a lot, and went to Brown.

Next is SCHUYLER, a friend of Jeff’s who took over Andrew’s old mini room. He is from Vermont and grew up in what he calls a weird structured building that his parents and their friends built after dropping out of architecture school. SO he grew up in a weird awesome communal way sort of like us crazy Alaskans ;) Probably not like Ionia but still in a off the highway kind of way which I think is rad! He goes out of town a few days a week to work as an artist. He does sculture and draws I believe. He is so calm and has a joyful presence which is inviting and warm. And he does handy work around that house which is well, freaking sweet!

You all know JOHN and I, bro and sis from a family of 13 Eller kids and from an awesome crazy community in Alaska, aka Ionia! John is going to the New school full time for creative writing but still makes time to play guitar and sing with Mirra and I. He has found the love for cooking and eating food again! YAY! He use to say, food is just fuel. :( eewww yucky thing to say. To lose the art of food and cooking is a sad thing. Especially for us who came from a place where food was so focussed on and a big part of our lives, and still is. What an art food can be if you pay attention to it. I hurt my leg from a mix of capoeira and yoga funny enough. I think it is okay, but I have to chain myself to the bed to try and stay off it for a few weeks :( Before that happen, I was getting into shape again, playing a lot of capoeira and starting to do yoga again. I was assisting teaching kids capoeira which was really really fun! I will start all that up again once I’m all healed up. I play music a lot and  teach Macrobiotic cooking classes for a greek family on the upper west side. That’s my life right now, music, cooking, capoeira and yoga. No relationships in my life which feels empowering honestly. I’ve never felt like that before. I don’t know why, I think it’s because I have never felt so strong and happy in my whole life! I love NYC!

Pics of the new house crew to come soon!

Jane,

Mirra wrote a few lines on here too.

My little bro Lauden is here staying with us tell he get’s se

It’s lovely to have him! He is cooking everday and every meal almost. We love him hah! He is the new addition and now we have 3 Ellers in the da house! He is here tell we go to Israel in June as a test run to see if he wants to move here full time. I personally think he does very well here I could see him revving the peddle and driving the energy to open up the NYC Macro. I hope he stays and if he’s lucky we will make room in our house for him ;)

dinner for 5

had an amazing dinner at candle 79 on the upper east side. you have got to check it out and whatever you do don’t miss out on the chili seitan and the connolis. omg.

Missing You Guys and Gals

My favorite Macrobiotic Tea isn’t technically a “tea” but hot Apple Cider Kuzu has been warming me up lately, while keeping off  those cold symptoms that everyone I know seems to be experiencing right now… Things in the Philly scene have been great lately, (I personally miss a particular little Alaskan!) but all you guys need to come visit me as soon as you can.

Peace,

Garrett

afternoon naps

it’s the first quiet moment in the house we’ve had in a while. no music playing, no loud talking, no funny business. real quiet. i’d go ahead and assume we’ve all been tired out from a long weekend of social occasions and dinner parties (here of course). that and some of us have joined in the “no pants subway ride” and aren’t home. i will of course protect the anonymity of those select few.

i’ve been noticing the effects of the changing weather on our house. these afternoons when we are home are spent napping, and drinking shit loads of tea. you may ask: “what are the favorite winter teas of the macro house?” in answer to that question I would have to say: chai black (from the park slope coop), genmaicha, twining’s irish breakfast, and the endless kukicha kept hot in our big thermos.

yesterday andrew made our first sourdough loaves (we have been impatiently awaiting the readiness of the sourdough starter) and steamed one up and baked two. oh man. nothing like homemade bread. now all we need is some apple butter.

all to say: winter is a time for cat naps, bread baking, tea drinking and snugglin’.

there’s my two cents.
